Time estimate2–3 hours for comfortable DIYers
If you've done basic plumbing before — cutting pipe, using compression fittings, shutting off main water — the CF1 is manageable. Springwell's installation manual and YouTube videos are excellent. If plumbing is not your comfort zone, hire a plumber. Expect $200–$500 for professional installation.
What you need
- All hardware in the Springwell box (bypass valve, fittings, sediment housing)
- Pipe cutter or hacksaw
- Adjustable wrench and pliers
- Teflon tape (thread seal tape)
- Bucket and towels
- PEX, copper, or CPVC pipe and fittings for your specific connection (not always included — check your main line type)
- Optional: TDS meter to verify performance after installation
Installation steps
- Choose your location — Where the main water line enters your home, before the water heater. You need 6–8 inches of clearance around the tank for servicing.
- Shut off the main water supply
- Cut the main line — Make two cuts to create space for the bypass valve assembly
- Install the bypass valve — Connects to the main line on both sides, allows you to bypass the filter for servicing
- Connect to the CF1 tank — Inlet and outlet connections to the tank. Mark the inlet (water IN) and outlet (water OUT) before connecting
- Install the sediment pre-filter housing — This goes before the main tank on the inlet side
- Secure the tank — Use the included mounting bracket if needed
- Turn the water on slowly — Check all connections for leaks before pressurizing fully
- Flush the system — Run water through for 10 minutes to clear carbon fines from new media before drinking
Common mistakes to avoid
- Wrong inlet/outlet direction — Water must flow in the correct direction. Check the arrow markings on the tank before connecting.
- Under-tightening fittings — Compression fittings need to be snug. Hand-tight plus 1.5 turns with a wrench. Too loose = leak. Too tight = cracked fitting.
- Skipping the flush — New carbon media releases fines that taste and smell off. Always flush before drinking.
- Installing too close to a wall — Leave 6–8 inches of clearance for changing the sediment pre-filter without fighting for space.
- Not labeling the bypass — Label your bypass valve positions (service/bypass) so you can use it easily in the future.
